Meet the Staff

Cortlynn Stark, Editor in Chief

Cortlynn Stark is a Sophomore from Lawrence, Kansas. She is majoring in Print (Internet) Journalism with a specific interest in sports and news writing. After graduating, Cortlynn wants to write for a major news network. In her free time, she volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and plays soccer..


Asia Key, Vice-President/Co-Editor in Chief

Asia Key is currently a senior at Missouri State University. Her major is Print/Internet Journalism with a minor in Creative Writing. Raised in Kansas City, Missouri, but also frequenting St. Louis, Missouri, Seattle, Washington and a host of other cities, Asia has adopted a love for traveling and experiencing the multitude of cultures this world has to offer. She plans, one day, to be a writer – and to use her voice to uplift others and spread love and light where there are none.


Angela Agaen, Secretary

Angela Agaen is a senior student currently majoring in Nursing. She is a member of the African student association, Untamed Tongue poetry and also Trio. She hopes to one day make a huge impact on the society by saving lives.


Sabrina DeLynne Merrill, Comics/Columnist

Sabrina Merrill is a Marketing/Animation major with a minor in Spanish. She’s been doing official newspaper comics since sophomore year in high school, and regular comics since she was a kid. She is also into reading and video games and is “super hype” to be a member of the Black Bear!


Kayla Jones, Multimedia Journalist

Kayla Jones is a junior pursuing a bachelors degree in Communication Studies with an English minor. Kayla is on the executive board of the African Student Association, a member of the Association of Black Collegians, and serves as a host and featured personality for countless campus events. Kayla aims to produce content with an emphasis on female progression and black culture.


Austin Kelly, Multimedia Journalist

Austin Kelly is a freshman, double majoring in Journalism and Fashion Merchandising. He is looking to get into fashion journalism, but enjoys writing over multiple topics. He was raised in West Plains, Missouri, where he spent his first twenty  years of life. Austin enjoys cheerleading, comic books, video games, music and hanging with his best friends on campus. Austin hopes to write his own comic one day and eventually open up a bakery at the end of his journey (a complete stray from his education goals).


Chris Collins, Multimedia Journalist/ Sports

Chris Collins is a senior majoring in Journalism. Chris is the President of the Association of Black Collegians and is also a part of the ESPN Campus Connect. Chris aspires to be a Sports Anchor or Sports Analyst one day.


Jevon Busby, Multimedia Journalist / Sports, News

JeVon Bausby was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri and is majoring in Communication Studies, with a minor in Journalism. He plans on venturing off into the broadcasting world, covering sports, entertainment or business.


Prof. Leonard Horton, M.S. Journalism, Faculty Adviser, The Black Bear

In 2013, Prof. Horton began his journey with Missouri State University’s Media, Journalism, and Film department after teaching at Florida A&M University as an Assistant Professor and working as a television news reporter and documentary producer. When not at work, Prof. Horton enjoys spending time with his family.
